Music Course Offerings at M-CHS
The instrumental music department at Montezuma-Cortez High School is proud to offer the following courses for the 2017-2018 school year:
Advanced Band (MU101/102): This course is open by audition to students who play a band instrument. Year-long enrollment includes participation in the M-CHS Marching Panthers and Pep Band as well as the Symphonic Winds. Students in this group will have the opportunity to travel extensively throughout the school year, and are expected to maintain academic eligibility at all times.
Concert Band (MU109/110): This course is designed for students wishing to continue the study and performance of their instrument without the rigorous extracurricular demands of the advanced band. Students in this ensemble will perform 2-4 concerts per semester both within the school and out in the community.
Jazz Band (MU103): Participation in this ensemble is open by audition only to students who play a jazz instrument. This ensemble rehearses during zero hour after the conclusion of the marching season, and travels throughout the winter and spring. Students in this group are expected to maintain academic eligibility at all times.
Color Guard (MU105): Colorguard membership is open by audition only (typically held in May), and is taught concurrently with Advanced Band during the fall semester. Students interested in participating in this group should check out the color guard page.
Beginning Percussion (MU111): This course is open to all students wishing to learn how to play a percussion instrument (the drums). While no prior experience is required, students are required to purchase a set of Size 2B drum sticks.
Introduction to Guitar (MU113): This course is open to all students who have an interest in learning basic guitar skills. Class is designed for beginning guitar players to learn to fluently read music and understand basic technique. Students are responsible for providing their own guitars for this class.
Instrumental Methods (MU116): This course is open to all students wishing to learn a band instrument or study a secondary instrument. This course requires students to pay a one-time fee of $15. Instruments will be provided.
Music Appreciation (MU112): This dual-credit course will allow students to examine and study the role of music in society, culture, the world, and our lives. Through the exploration of various genres, technologies, and world events, students will leave this class with a better understanding and appreciation of the role of music in their lives and in the modern world.
Piano Class (MU206): Beginning piano studies open to all students wishing to learn basic piano skills.
Music Theory (MU106): This course is offered to students interested in taking their study of music to the next level. Highly recommended for students considering studying music in college.
